When to Visit the Stunning Lofoten Islands in Norway
By Sam Lee, 2025.
A stunning archipelago in Norway, the Lofoten Islands go through mood swings with the seasons — so, yeah, timing is everything for your trip.

June to August
July to August are the busiest months on the Lofoten islands, with arguably the best weather for visiting beaches and other outdoor activities, but you might spend some time in crowds or moderate traffic jams.
If you visit during summer, set off early on the more popular hikes like Reinebringen, Kvalvika, and Ryten to avoid some of the crowds.
To experience summer conditions without the crowds, visit in June. It's the best month to experience the midnight sun (20/21 June), where the sun will dip towards the horizon but not set.

September to December
September is a great month to visit the Lofoten Islands. The weather is still pleasant, and the Northern lights begin. However, it’s from October when the Northern Lights come out in earnest (although it's never guaranteed).
December is a lovely month to visit because the Christmas cheer and festive lights make it a special experience. You may see snow and Northern Lights in December, but you never know. One thing is for certain: The weather in Norway is uncertain!

Mid-February to mid-April
To see Lofoten under snow, visit the islands from mid-February to mid-April. These are the best winter months since the days are already longer.
Remember that if you want to visit any of the mountains, you must be adequately equipped. Snowshoes/skis are recommended, and avalanche knowledge and equipment are required for mountains with steep terrain.
If good weather conditions are on your side, you can see the Northern Lights during these months.

The best time to visit the Lofoten Islands
Each season offers something unique and wonderful, so it’s hard to recommend one month over another. It really depends on the experience you are seeking.
If I had to choose, May, June, or September would be at the top of my list for a warmer weather experience without the crowds, and October and March would be my top choices for seeing the Northern Lights.
