Lesser-Known Romantic Places in Europe That Won’t Empty Your Wallet
Don’t you just love it when you’re on a romantic getaway, and right as you’re about to go in for a big smooch, some rando clocks you with a selfie stick? True story! Let’s be real: some of the most ‘romantic’ spots in Europe are basically tourist zoos. Facts.
Well, not today, my friends, because I’m giving you the lowdown on seven destinations in Europe that I give a big five stars for romance and cost-friendliness.
Think fairytale towns and secret seaside havens—ideal for couples craving a cozy retreat. So, let’s dive into these seven lesser-known and affordable romantic getaways!
01—
Piran, Slovenia
Piran is like the love child of Italy and Slovenia, offering coastal charm with a dash of Eastern European flair. Walk hand-in-hand with your special someone through narrow, winding streets and admire sunset views from the medieval walls.
If you love a bit of history, the town is filled with landmarks and quaint little corners. Climb the bell tower for a panoramic view that'll make you feel on top of the world.
Don't forget to visit Tartini Square, the town's main square named after the violinist Giuseppe Tartini, where you can sit back and people-watch while savoring a gelato. There's also a tiny, cute lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula that's perfect for a cozy photo op.
Piran is one of those hidden gems that you'll be bragging about discovering for years to come. If you’re staying longer than a long weekend, I recommend looking into local tours around Slovenia, including a few nights in Ljubljana (possibly the most underrated city in Europe).

Madeira, Portugal
This Portuguese archipelago is a haven for couples looking to get away from the crowds and bask in truly stunning landscapes. Everywhere you look is stunning. Hike through lush, flower-lined terraces with a background that looks like a photo (but maybe even better!).
Like a little adventure? Try canyoning down waterfalls, hit the water and go snorkeling, or take a leisurely stroll through the famous botanical gardens. And let's talk sunsets—grab a cozy spot on one of the island's dramatic cliffs and watch the sky turn pastel blue and pink.
For a romantic meal, head to a local restaurant and overindulge in some fresh, delicious seafood paired with a glass of Madeira wine. Or indulge in a local wine tour (so good; totally recommend for wine lovers!).
Whether you're exploring rugged trails or sharing a bottle of wine as the sun dips below the horizon, Madeira really does offer a wonderful romantic escape without draining your wallet.

Sintra, Portugal
Yes, another Portuguese gem. Sintra is like a scene straight out of a fantasy novel, with castles and gardens that make you feel like royalty, especially the stunning Pena Palace with its whimsical and vibrant design.
Stroll through the Quinta da Regaleira gardens and enjoy the hidden tunnels and secret grottoes. And let's not forget the views! From the Moorish Castle, you can gaze out over the town and beyond, soaking in a stunning panorama. It's the ideal spot for a quiet moment together.
Hungry? Head to a local café for a pastel de nata, a creamy and flaky mini pastry. Warning: they are so addictive. It’ll be hard to stop at one! Pair them with a strong Portuguese coffee, and you'll have a match in heaven. Pro tip: Sintra has a microclimate, so be prepared for all types of weather. Also, try to avoid visiting in August, which is the peak tourist month.

Gjirokastër, Albania
If you and your partner are history buffs with a taste for romance, Gjirokastër is your kind of place. This Albanian town, often called the "City of Stone," boasts cobblestone streets and Ottoman-era houses that look straight out of a historical drama.
Meander through its labyrinthine streets and let yourself get pleasantly lost. Every corner has something amazing—a quaint café here, an ancient artifact there. The town is crowned by a massive fortress that offers panoramic views perfect for a selfie or a quiet moment.
Climbing up to the castle might leave you breathless, but it's a great way to bond (over your shared leg pain!) and take in the sweeping vistas of the valley below. If you're both into history, the castle's museum is a treasure trove of artifacts that'll give you plenty to discuss over a romantic dinner later.
Speaking of dinner, the local cuisine is nothing short of wonderful. Try some traditional Albanian dishes at one of the local eateries. Share a plate of byrek or savor the taste of locally made raki.

Milos, Greece
Milos is Greece's best-kept secret, offering stunning beaches and budget-friendly things to do. Unlike the crowded tourist spots, this island focuses on exploring its moon-like coastlines, charming fishing villages, and secluded coves, perfect for couples. Affordable, genuine, and incredibly romantic, Milos is the Greek island you didn't realize you were missing.
Soak up the sun on the moon-like white cliffs of Sarakiniko Beach, enjoy a boat excursion to the hidden caves of Kleftiko, discover the colorful fishing village of Klima, famous for its vibrant "syrmata" houses, and admire the sunset from Plaka Village.

Krakow, Poland
Krakow is a historic and romantic city. Its beautifully preserved medieval center, inviting cafes, and budget-friendly dining spots make it an ideal destination for a romantic trip that won't break the bank.
Wander through Krakow's Kazimierz District for artistic flair and historical depth, and head to Planty Park, a picturesque garden encircling the old town that is perfect for a romantic walk.
Rynek Glowny, the largest medieval square in Europe, is your go-to for free culture—street performers, market vendors, the works. And Wawel Castle overlooking the Vistula River is a must-see. It’s perfect for a long weekend escape.

Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia is a true hidden gem. Seriously. This little Italian island in the Mediterranean flaunts stunning beaches, emerald waters, and scenic hiking trails.
Since it's not as crowded as spots like Tuscany or the Sicilian coast — or the more famous and expensive neighboring island Corsica — you can enjoy a candlelit dinner in Sardinia without someone's selfie stick in your way!
Don't miss exploring the charming historic district of Cagliari. Its winding streets, ancient palaces, and medieval walls make it perfect for a romantic escape. And the sunsets around Il Castello? They practically beg for a little smoochie smoochie!
While Sardinia's cities are great, the surrounding islands and waters make it one of Italy's most romantic spots. You can visit the almost Caribbean-like Santa Maria island and explore 67 other islands nearby.
Whether you're up for a snorkeling adventure or prefer soaking in the stunning landscapes from your waterfront resort, Sardinia will crank up your romance factor big time.
